Re: New frequencies for FT8

Rick,

Yes I can imagine that’s really going to impact anyone who wants to operate digital modes like PSK31 and MFSK. It’s a pity because I’ve been seeing more and more PSK31 activity recently.

On the list of changes for the next release on the WSJT webaite..

"On a trial basis, and in response to numerous suggestions from around the world, we have added a second set of suggested dial frequencies for FT8 on three HF bands and also on 6 meters. The new suggested dial frequencies are 7.071, 10.133, 14.071, and 50.310 MHz."

I try to do at least 3 evenings a week on PSK31 and 63 along with MFSK on or about 14.071 This will effect that whole area..

Is there somewhere on the web showing the new proposed frequencies?

FYI, in case you have not heard (or experienced).  With the new release of WSJTX NEW frequencies are provided as suggested operating areas for FT8.  Several taking them closer to tradition PSK31, Olivia, Thor suggested frequencies.  I don't have big problems with it, but some are already sqawking

VARA on FM 2M

Andrew OBrien

I know many of us here are well experienced with VARA.  I have been toying with the idea of trying VARA on FM but have been slowed trying to get my Icom 5100 to work with a Rigblaster while awaiting the release of the  Icom 705.  Well it looks like others are ahead of me with the idea of VARA on FM 2M, see this video link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzpzbjhjSAQ

Eric KJ4YZI shows how to use RMS Express with VARA FM AND already has Winlink server stations in his area on 2M.  Very interesting.

Re: Instructional Videos

As I have often stated in this group, the art of signal recognition can be greatly enhanced by :
1. Frequency the signal is using
2. Width of the signal
3. Waveform of the signal
4. Sound the signal makes

Spend some time learning those 4 things as they apply to the various modes and about 80% of the time your eyes and ears will assist you brain in identifying the signal within 2-4 seconds of seeing/hearing it.

If you can discern Oasis from The Beatles , Def Leopard from Guns N Roses , Coldplay from Radiohead or Arcade Fire from The Killers , you can discern the subtleties of ham digital modes . Ute digital modes are another matter !

Digital mode identification is something that's often overlooked. This video sheds some light on that subject. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwkz0GNpA0I

It might be helpful if you tell us what software you are referring to.   There's a lot of digital mode software out there.  That info will help with tips also.

Re: RMS Trimode and RMS Relay 'now support's forwarding via Vara #VARA

Graham

Apparently  not Andy

I must admit ,  its not  something  i've  been involved with,  little  or no call
in the  uk for the  function , since the  packet system's demise , e-mail
over radio , has given way to  web based .

- Some interesting  exchanges on the  Vara group . relating to the  latest
Vara-4 , which as well providing  faster throughput ... also  appears to  have
a narrow b/w   500 Hz  mode , no details yet, but, that  complies with the
usa mailbox forwarding b/w  requirements ..which  I assume was the
reason for  coding it

If it  retains the  mfsk-ofdm  format, then at  500 Hz b/w  that also
fits the  MF  ' suggested'  data b/w , MF emergency  comm's  was one
of the  'yet to  be  addressed' uses  ..

Re: Rigblaster jumpers for Icom 5100 ?

Andrew OBrien

My cable arrived but wired WAY differently than a Rigblaster expects

Rigblaster Spec                                 What I have
RJ45   DIN                                     RJ45   DIN female
1           8                                         1            4
2           7                                         2            6
3           6                                         3            1
4           5                                         4            7
5           4                                         5            5
6           3                                         6            8
7           2                                         7            3
8           1                                         8            2

I'll see if I can splice in the middle, rather than attempt to solder....  my eyes can't handle DIN plugs anymore. My soldering was never good anyway.

From  vara  groups :-

With the release of Trimode version 1.3.30.0 and RMS Relay version 3.1.0.0,

Winlink now supports Vara for HF message forwarding.

Re: FT4 curve increasing

Tnx Bernie ,

What are the  limitations, how many  chr may be  sent  ?
is it clearing the  full  text  input at  every   Tx ?

looking at the  ft8  signals ,the  tx looks to  last  round 11 or  12  seconds
4 is half that  ?

Yes you can exchange text.

Lately, I finish each FT4 QSO with “BE SAFE 73”
