ICQ is a free program that monitors a list of "friends" and lets you know if
they are on line or not. You got send messages back and fourth to each
other. I will send you some information about how to obtain it.

Has PSK replaced RTTY ?

Andrew J. O'Brien <obrienaj@...>

In the original 1999 QST article , the first time many of us had heard of
PSK, the author suggested that PSK might replace RTTY . I recall that
later the author, and maybe even Peter G3PLX, minimized such claims .
However I think that PSK may well have replaced RTTY and that PSK is clearly
the most active digital mode, after CW.

Recent surveys of the bands indicate that 20 simultaneous PSK QSO's is not
uncommon on 20M, whereas RTTY (on none contests days) may have 4-5 active
QSO's at one time.

On other bands PSK usually outnumbers RTTY on 10 , RTTY still outnumber PSK
on 15 , and 80, and there are about equal on the rest of the H.F. bands.

This morning (1100 UTC) I was unable to find a RTTY signal on any ham band
but found 12 PSK QSO's instantly .

Just my general comments, I have nothing against RTTY and still fire up my
PK232 for RTTY contacts... when I find them

Re: Has PSK replaced RTTY ?

Andrew J. O'Brien <obrienaj@...>

Aha, good point.

Andy.

Andy,
If you're finding 4-5 RTTY qsos on at one time on non contest
days,
then to me it appears RTTY activity has not reduced significantly
on 20M because of the arrival of PSK.

THROB MODE QUESTION

w3wt@...

I downloaed the new THROB program. I have copied strong signals, but unable
to print anything that makes sence. What is the proper method of tuning?

Ive heard a few signals on 20 meters, quite strong, so should had printed
just fine.

Thanks.

Computer Help Request

n7dc@...

I have a Compaq 486 66 Im trying to use for digital commo here but having a
fit of a time reading anything on the screen. Any Gurus out thee that can
help please feel free to send me a note.
I attempted to add a deskjet 712c printer driver and the software said
something about "your colors are wrong- do you wish to change them?" I ,
like an idiot said yes. At that point, my monitor screen went bezerk. It
worke fine, when using DOS, but the moment I went to windows 95, I get the
flying window screen ok, then when 95 comes up, I got 6 sets (parallel) of
icons, making the screen completely unreadable. That was a year ago and
nothing I have been able to do has gotten my nice readable screen back. I
have tried it on three different monitors and note that with two IBM SVGA
screens, I have only 3 sets of icons showing up (still blurry and unreadable
for the most part. I went into safe mode and changed the monitor to IBM 1581
model, to no avail. Changed the colors from 16 to 256 , again with no change
in results. Attempted 16 high, and 24 and got readouts that said I couldnt
use those. So here I sit, still without being able to use the computer for
rtty etc. The thing works with DOS, but when I got to WIN95, its worthless.
Was going to run the WIN95 CD back thru , but you cant use the CD when in
Safe Mode, as the CD is deactivated there. By the way, I deleted the Deskjet
712C driver, but like everything else, it was to no avail. Anyone ever had
this problem, and what did you do to solve it? Thanks
Danny N7DC

Re: THROB MODE QUESTION

Paulus <paulstra@...>

Hello John,

Yes Throb is Sideband dependant.
I hope that soon Lionel g3ppt has an Reverse button is his program, so that
we can use USB as standard and stations using LSB can Reverse to USB.

Chance is that the strong stations you hear are in LSB, due to the fact that
they can use in LSB narrow receive Xtalfilters.

Another thing: If the program Throb is fired up, pse use always the SETUP
again and just give OK, when your callsign and comport is in it allready. I
noticed, and many others I presume, that otherwise the comport is not
initiated.... hi

Cheerio now,
Have more time after this week, to be late QRV on Throb.

Re: Computer Help Request

n7dc@...

Well I did have another machine but when I went to 100 Mhz with it, it burnt
out the memory chips, so much for dx2 chips. Was running rtty in dos with
it, but it was a dos 6.2 win 3.1 machine. Ran some amtor etc, had no sound
card, so didnt use any of those programs- use MFJ 1278B tnc. But even at
that, I still need to try to get win 95 up and running again with a good
video output to the monitor- this was my family machine, which I have
replaced with at 466MHZ one. Danny

Hi
Sorry for CC. I need Info on Soundcard Connected Decoders. As SWL also
interested in non Ham Bands.
Any Ideas: Especially Sitor A and B. Have all norms.

FTV tried not compliant.

Re: Computer Help Request

Jack <jbfriend@...>

You need a faster machine for good work in digital modes. Recommended
minimum running Windows95/98 is 100 MHz or faster. Try running DOS programs
and you will be okay. Jack ak7o

Re: obnoxious egroup ads

Can you set the reply to go to the group instead of the poster at QTH ? No list there I have been on does. If you set up a list on QTH would you not feel bad for not paying to help support QTH ? I would. That is why I never set up lists there. I am not going to sponge off someone else who does it as a hobby an taking the money out of thier own pocket. If you are going to pay QTH why not the 4.95 a month ad free egroups. Just my thoughts. If everyone bombards egroups about it they may put them back at the bottom. support@egroups.com is a valid address. It always works for me. It just worked for me yesterday. I wasnt getting list mail from thier server for 5 days nor could I connect to thier site. I emailed them. Got 136 back list messages at once. They had some sort of DNS conflict with my ISP.

Bob why don't you take your list to QSL.NET/QTH.NET

No advertising at the hamradio lists

Most hamradio lists are QTH.NET anyhow!

It's FREE and funded by K3TKJ and some give also some contributions (not a must)

complaints!!!

Greetings everyone....

As you can see, eGroups has decided to put the obnoxious ads at the
top of the page where EVERYONE MUST READ THEM... as a result, I have
emailed support@egroups.com to express my complaint.

The result is, if they do not put the ads back at the bottom, I plan
to unsubscribe from egroups. If I do unsubscribe, I will be looking
for someone that is willing to take over as "moderator".

Any volunteers??
