Band statistics: CW still King ?

Andrew J. O'Brien <obrienaj@...>

About a year ago I posted the results of some random surveys of band
activity by mode. It got a few folks aroused since I mentioned that despite
all the "fuss" PSK31 was still quite clearly a minority mode, average 2-3
QSO's on 20M at any given time.

So, I thought I would do the same again. A random check using an
omni-directional antenna , nothing special.

Here is the band activity (20M)

CW 21 QSO's
SSB 20 QSO's
PSK31 10 QSO's (BPSK)
PACTOR 2 QSO's
MT63 2 QSO's
RTTY 1 QSO
SSTV 1 QSO
PACKET 1 QSO
ALE 0 QSO's
THROB 0 QSO's
AMTOR 0 QSO's
FAX 0 QSO's
MSK 0 QSO's
HELL 0 QSO'

A complete band scan at 2045 UTC with band in generally poor shape. Your
mileage may vary!

Hi all.
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of ZAKANAKA ?.
Question 2: Anyone have a suggestion for a decoder software I can use on
SITOR A, I have only my soundcard link at the moment, no interface, no free
com ports. Tall order I suppose.
But you wont get if you dont try.
Did anyone copy G3JYF tue PM, using Hell, very clear copy considering the
state of the band 3592khz.
Yes I know he is in England to but I seem to have more problems getting a
clear copy here than I do recieving Italy!.hi hi .
Anyway good listening etc:

Accessory versus Mic connection?

Andrew J. O'Brien <obrienaj@...>

I posted a comment to the Kenwood reflector that it would be nice if there
was a RigBlaster type product that used the accessory jacks of rigs rather
than the microphone connector. The replies I received were that RigBlaster
uses the mic connector and that is all a person would need.

I think I remember some comments on the PSK reflector a year ago, in the
early days, that the line level from the accessory connectors was easier to
deal with and that there was a slight chance of hardware damage if the mic
connectors were used . I realize that lots of people have successfully used
VOX/mic connections, and that Rigblaster has attenuation in their product,
so is there no real basis for my thinking that the accessory jack is better
that the mic connector for PSK work ?

Crude CW in Zakanaka

Andrew J. O'Brien <obrienaj@...>

IF you really want to do some CW use with Zakanaka, I have done it ...in a
round about way.

I used Zakanaka for transmitting CW, CWGet for translating/receiving CW, and
Logger for Zakanaka interface and logging.

Yes, someone might ask WHY one would do this but it can be done. Here's
how,

1. Launch Zakanaka, put Zakanaka in transmit mode (this keeps the device
already in use error from popping up when u do step 2)

2. Launch CWGet

3. Launch Logger.

4. Use Zakanaka's macros (I use 24-46 for CW) . The macros must start
with the $cw$ command.

e.g.

$transmit$
$cw$
r r 73 KB2EOQ FB $name$ ur rst = $hisrst$

If you do not want to use macros exclusively, set up one macros with like
this

$transmit$
$cw$

When you want to simply type in text for CW transmission right click on
that macro and type in you message. You will need to erase the message
before your next transmission.

5. Manually enter call sign and RST in Logger.

Hey MixW may do this WAY better, but it might get you by until Zakanaka has
CW. Of course , we could just used a key and our brain.

Throb

Paulus <paulstra@...>

Hello all,

Read about Throb on Lionels's (G3PPT) Site and you can also download the
program there.
How this all will work out has to be tested on the air, but the Throb mode
proved to be very sensitive and speed is not fast, but just enough to keep
the QSO going.
The Set has to be quite stable, but an AFC is added.
Also added is an "Testmode" to practice in tuning and fasing.

Even on 144 Mhz ssb we could hold an just (just) long enough to get the
callsign hi.
This was during an test with Thomas DH8iAT over an 450 km path on 144.660
Mhz an few days ago.
With the other modes hardly any copy was possible at all (Psk31 and FM245
Feldhell).

Today at 14.00 UTC at 21.063 carrier and later on 18.103 carrier at 14.30
UTC, we will be testing out the mode.

At 10.137 Mhz this evening we will continu, 18.00 UTC and later

Cheerio now, pse practice an bit before calling hi
