Re: Vara Vs. Pactor-III - Maximum Data Speed
Rick:
I wasn't sure if data compression was independent of the protocol so thanks for clearing that up. It would be wonderful to have a path simulator capable of handling ARQ

Thanks for the details Rick. Tony had good experience with path simulators , perhaps he will do one with VARA and PIII since he has access to both .

Tony,
First forget about compression mechanisms. The same compression mechanism will work with all protocols as long as the protocol can send true binary data (no special codes) The

Re: VARA in Gateway mode ?
Wow, that is easy. As a gateway all you need is VARA and as a client, VARA and Winlink Express using Telenet Winlink session. It looks like you can't do peer to peer.

Hi John,
Quite right.
To each, his own.
For me it is about receiving large catalog weather and news products and weather satellite images at sea, or in the Canadian wilderness.

Re: VARA in Gateway mode ?
It is really simple, I asked because it sounded two simple. I have already had two connects to it. Will put it up on 20M again tomorrow during the day.

Re: VARA in Gateway mode ?
Download the free version of VARA.
Click on Run with Winlink Express (now you are the client)
Click on Run as gateway (now you are the RMS)
Seriously, it is that simple.
Good concept as well, because

VARA in Gateway mode ?
To run VARA in HF gateway mode , do you need anything other than VARA RMS express in gateway mode ?

I am not sure if it is for the same reason, but in the early Winmor testing days I notice the same issues... it took Winmor a while to get up to full speed.

As people have found VARA can be very fast once it gets going, so is very good for sending large messages. Unfortunately is has some characteristics that make it less effective on batches of small

We need more VARA RMS's to cover bad propagation.
The only way to do some substantive

The PIII versus VARA example you posted , while separated by a few minutes and potentially different conditions, does give a ballpark comparison . I am encouraged.
