I am not sure what you are asking.

Most of the modern digital programs produce audio tones that feed into the microphone or audio input to the transmitter and the receiver audio goes into the microphone or aux input to the computer.

Yo do not need an external TU, just some audio interface to isolate the input and output of the computer and transceiver.  Yo can even place the computer microphone next to the receiver speaker in a quiet room to receive the digital signal in many cases.  

YOu can run VOX or manually switch the transmitter on, or some interface boxes will have a wire that connects to the transceiver to turn the transmitter on and off.
